Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is firmly committed to reducing its carbon emissions in line with global climate goals, with a long-term target of achieving significant reductions by 2050. This commitment is supported by a structured sustainability framework that integrates climate action into campus operations, research, education, and community engagement. UPM systematically monitors its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions using internationally recognised methodologies, specifically the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, ensuring that emissions are calculated, reported, and managed in a transparent and consistent manner across Scope 1, and Scope 2.
To achieve its 2050 target, UPM focuses on key strategies such as improving energy efficiency, expanding renewable energy adoption, and promoting low-carbon transportation. Efforts include increasing solar energy generation, optimising building energy performance, and encouraging sustainable mobility practices such as public transport, cycling, and carpooling. In parallel, UPM fosters awareness and behavioural change through sustainability education and training for staff and students. Research and innovation further support this agenda by developing green technologies and sustainable solutions. Through these integrated and data-driven approaches, UPM aims to progressively reduce its carbon footprint and contribute meaningfully to national and global climate action efforts.
